Sunday Tea in Umeå – Part 2

2015_09_13_9368

Linn and I had such a great time at Sunday Tea last time I was in Umeå that we made sure to go again this time. Truth be told, we might be going there every time I’m in town because that’s how much fun it is. Sunday Tea is at Umeå’s Stora Hotellet.

I can imagine that teatime may not be for everyone. But Linn and I can easily spend a couple hours taking pictures, drinking tea, chatting and eating our treats one at a time. We start with the scones, then the toasts, and finally the sweets. We even eat the sweets in descending order of suspected goodness.

We were so happy with the scones that we bought marmalade on the way home and made our own scones that night. We even imagined making our own marmalades, though neither of us have actually done that yet.

We went vegetarian so our sandwiches were cheese and chanterelle mushrooms. The mini croissants and mini cinnamon buns were really cute.

Here’s a link to the original post with more detailed info about the place and our experience. I definitely recommend a visit here if you find yourself in Umeå on a Sunday.

And, as usual, both pictures of me were taken by the amazing Linn.

Nya Konditoriet – Umeå- Best Cocoa!

NKdownstairsNya Konditoriet was the first cafe Phong took me to when I came to visit Umeå in 2008. They have since remodeled the bottom floor but the cakes have always been this pretty. The bottom floor is a bakery, now with some seating areas too, but the cafe is upstairs. There is no elevator.

The cake below was a marshmallow and raspberry mousse creation and the one on the right was chocolate.

nk2Upstairs is another case of pastries and sandwhiches. It’s one of my favorite cafes and right in the middle of town but it is often crowded and when I say crowded, I mean it. All the times I’ve been there when it’s full, I get this feeling like I need to hurry. Whereas I tend to sit long at other cafes and chat.

As mentioned, NK has my favorite hot cocoa in town.

Mat och Prat – Umeå

MatOPratlatte

Mat och Prat is a cafe in the galleria Up2. They are not a bakery but they do serve hot lunch dishes and some very sugary coffees. It’s a nice cafe with great windows overlooking the main street in centrum.

MatOPrat7

As you can see, I don’t seem to go to cafes for lunch. MatOPrat

They have iced coffees as well as hot ones and usually come up with the more interesting ones. I heard that they had a gingerbread latte over christmas but we never managed to get there while I was in town.

As with other cafes inside of malls, they don’t have their own bathrooms and, in case you’re not from Sweden, the bathrooms will cost money to use. A good reason to keep some change on you at all times.

Kafe Station – Umeå – Best Carrot Cake

KScase

Kafe Station is a cafe down by the movie theatre. It is surprisingly large. It kind of just keeps going, so if you’re looking for a table, keep walking and you might find one.

KSlatte

They have my favorite carrot cake in town. Be warned, the pieces are huge!

They also have a very clever set up in summer where you can take your coffee and treats in a basket with a blanket outside to sit in the park across the street.

This is a very popular family cafe in town and can get pretty loud.

Oh! And they have an icecream bar too. I’ve never tried it but I’ve been tempted on occassion. Unfortunately, icecream never wins over cookies and cake as far as I’m concerned.

You might have noticed by now that I also have a thing for lattes. They always have flavoring or sugar. I drink coffee as a dessert. I also love cocoa and will say that Kafe Station has a pretty good one.

Cafe Kakmonstret – Umeå – My personal favorite!

cafekm10(this beautiful picture, and the last one of myself, were taken by Linn Arvidsson)

Cafe Kakmonstret is, hands down, my favorite cafe in town. It’s not right in the middle of centrum so it’s not usually over crowded but it’s definately not out of the way. Privately owned, this bakery/cafe is one of a kind and a great spot. The staff are really nice, the treats amazing, and the cafe itself is lovely. It’s a house turned into a cafe with connecting rooms.

Cafe Kakmonstret means Cafe Cookie Monster in english. They make some of the most interesting desserts I’ve run into and they’re always amazing.

Gingerbread cheesecake, for example.

They also make the viol biskvi that rekindled my love of biskvi.

cafekm7

It’s a family cafe so it has a back entrance with a ramp for baby carriages and one of the rooms is set up as a play room for kids. Despite this, it somehow manages to be a much quieter cafe than others I’ve been to.

It also has great chairs and a homey, super clean, bathroom.

Because Kakmonstret is a bakery, they make all their own treats and you can order cakes and such to go. They also serve lunch foods if you’re looking for something more substantial.

I’m pretty sure, if I were to live in a cafe, it would be this one. It also turned out to be the prefect cafe for craftfikas, great lighting, great food, great staff.
